Sam Outlaw Returns with 'Tenderheart' Out 4/14

(Press Release) Sam Outlaw - one of Los Angeles’s only modern country artists – has shared details for his anticipated sophomore LP, entitled ‘Tenderheart,’ out April 14th  on Six Shooter Records. Outlaw spoke with Rolling Stone Country about the new album and shared an album trailer this morning with a preview of some new music. Read/watch here:  http://rol.st/2jQZeGF

On ‘Tenderheart,’ Outlaw offers an extraordinary refinement of the artistic identity laid out on ‘Angeleno’. Sonically, the album elaborates on his “SoCal Country” sound: a sun-bleached, Baja-influenced twang that deftly points to country’s neo-traditionalists and LA’s legendary singer-songwriters. Thematically, ‘Tenderheart’ is a thesis on self-discovery and the power of love – from the cinematic mariachi-laced climax on opener “Everyone’s Looking For Home,” to the determined swagger on side-A highlight “Trouble,” to torch song showstopper “Diamond Ring” - Outlaw meditates on his own conflicted quest for peace amidst the chaos of his chosen path.

The 13-track collection of originals was recorded in the San Fernando Valley and co-produced by Outlaw alongside Martin Pradler. Outlaw enlisted many of the same musicians that made his first album, 2015’s ‘Angeleno,’ an undisputed breakthrough and one of the best-reviewed debuts of that year: harmony singer Molly Jenson, pedal steel pro Jeremy Long and guitarist Danny Garcia, along with Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes) and Bo Koster (My Morning Jacket). In addition, ‘Tenderheart’ features local mariachi group Erwin Vasquez and Mariachi Teocuitatlan.

‘Angeleno’ earned raves NPR Music, Rolling Stone Country, New Yorker, LA Times, Wall Street Journal + many more. LA weekly called him “contender to be the biggest country star L.A. has produced since Dwight Yoakam,” he landed tours with Kacey Musgraves and Yoakam, and made his TV debut on CBS Saturday Morning with a performance and interview with Anthony Mason: http://bit.ly/1UnXDWm

Video Premiere: Phil Gammage "Maybe Tomorrow"

New York-based recording artist Phil Gammage’s latest music video from his new album  Used Man For Sale   is for his song “Maybe Tomorrow”. The tune is a departure from Phil’s usual blues-based songwriting style and captures the vibe of the 1960’s era Nashville "countrypolitan sound”. It features a Floyd Cramer influenced piano along Gammage’s powerful baritone lead vocals.

Filmed in Miami Beach, Florida, Gammage had this to say of the song,
“When we went into the studio to record 'Maybe Tomorrow' my producer Kevin Tooley and I wanted to capture the vibe of the 1960’s-era Nashville "countrypolitan sound”. The song is a bit of a departure from my usual blues-based songwriting style but it fits in nicely with the rest of the songs on the  Used Man For Sale  album. We filmed it in Miami Beach and like almost all of my music videos it’s in black and white. I love the retro feel it gives video.”

Beth Bombara – the Americana artist who’s opened for Pokey LaFarge, Waxahatchee, Madisen Ward & Mama Bear, and Joe Pug – has found her way with new album ‘Map & No Direction,’ out  March 3. After servicing as a side-woman for many years with Samantha Crain and she’s found her voice as a frontwoman on the new album. And after battling depression – as Beth puts it “a couple months of a can’t-quite-get-out-of-bed, always-tired-but-can’t-sleep kind of depression” – she’s found her clarity as a songwriter. The result is equal parts George Harrison-influenced hooky Americana and rock & roll and "like a bourbon-warmed Neko Case" as her hometown Riverfront Times put it in naming her best Americana artist in St. Louis, MO. She’s also drawn comparisons to Kathleen Edwards.

Some say It’s like we’re creating a whole new genre”, she added. Dan Johnson Releases "Troubadour's Prayer" feat. Walt Wilkins

1/27/2017

Walt Wilkins inarguably personifies the idea of a true Texas troubadour. It was specifically Walt’s talent, mystique, and even the sense of spirituality in his music that inspired Dan Johnson, of the Salt Cedar Rebels, to become a songwriter.

Dan recounts, "I was in Red River, New Mexico, attending the Texas Red’s Songwriter Festival the first time I saw Walt play. He was singing “If it Weren’t for You” to a silent, spellbound crowd, with just him and his guitar on stage. I knew that was what I wanted to do with my life. After the show, I told him it was the prettiest song I’d ever heard, and I wanted to go into music full-time. He wished me lots of luck, because it’s a difficult path. A year later, I was playing this Thursday night, solo gig in Amarillo. It started off absolutely depressing. I mean it was seriously just me, the sound guy, and the bartender! I was sitting there on stage, really doubting myself. I kept thinking ‘nobody is listening, and nobody cares. This was a mistake.’

But while I was singing, I thought about that night in Red River and what Walt’s inspiration meant to me. I wondered how many times he had played to an empty room when he started and no one knew his name. So I made up my mind that I’d play for those two people like they were a thousand. I poured my heart out. And the most amazing thing happened. Before I even finished that same song, the door flew open and the bar literally filled up with people. It was like an answer to a prayer. That night I sat down and wrote ‘Troubadour’s Prayer.’”
